What visitors did, and what is not measured

On this page

Analytics shows what visitors did on your published brand hub: how many people opened it, on what kind of device, where they came from, which manual they opened, which sections they read, which files they clicked, and how often the API was called. All of them are totals. No cookie is set to measure anything and no visitor is identified.

WhereDashboard, Analytics

Opening the page

Anyone who may view the manual can open Analytics, the Viewer included. The page opens on 30 days. The range buttons at the top right are 7 days, 30 days, 90 days and 12 months. The range you pick is in the address, so you can send the link to somebody.

The numbers belong to the brand you are in. A second brand has its own page. See Brands, manuals and how they fit together.

Views and the four tiles

A view is one opening of your published brand hub.

Views in 30 days
The total in the range you picked, with the change against the same length of time before it. With no earlier period to compare, it says so instead of showing a percentage.
Average per day
The range total divided by its days, with the busiest day under it.
Views today
Today so far, counted in UTC days.
All time
Every view ever recorded for this brand, whatever range is selected, with the date of the first one.

Views per day draws one bar per day. Hover a bar to see its date. A range with no views says so and shows no chart.

Which manual was opened

Manuals lists the top ten manuals of the range, each with its count, its share of the range and its public address. A manual you have unpublished keeps the views it earned and is marked unpublished beside its address.

A manual that moved brands

Move a manual to another brand and its views stay here, listed as A manual no longer in this brand. See Handing a brand over, moving a manual, leaving.

Devices and where readers come from

Devices has two segments, Desktop and Mobile. Tablets count as Mobile. Nothing finer is recorded.

Where readers come from lists the top eight sites readers clicked through from, by hostname. A leading www. is removed, so www.acme.com and acme.com are one line. Direct covers a typed address, a bookmark, a link in a mail client or a document, and anything else that sent no referrer. Only the hostname is kept, never the page address.

Which sections are read

Most read sections lists the top twelve sections of the range, each with its count and its share of all section reads, and the manual's name under it when the brand has more than one.

  • A section counts as read when at least half of it has been on the reader's screen for a full second.
  • It counts once per page opening, however long the reader stays or how often they scroll back.
  • A section you have deleted is listed under its anchor instead of its title, and keeps its count.

Which files are clicked

Downloads lists the top twelve files of the range, each with a total and a small chart of its days. The asset library shows a download count beside each file too. A file is counted when:

  • a reader clicks it on the published page, when the link points at the brand's own files,
  • somebody downloads it from the asset library,
  • it is inside a ZIP the dashboard builds, counted once per file rather than once per archive.

Counts are kept under the file name. Two files with the same name share one line. Renaming a file starts a new line, and the old name keeps the counts it already had.

How often the API is called

API calls per day counts the requests the API (opens in a new tab) answered for this brand's manuals, with the top six manuals by calls under the chart. The dashboard page API (opens in a new tab) shows the same calls next to your tokens and your rate limit.

  • Only answered requests count. A request refused for a wrong or missing token, an address that does not exist, or a rate limit is not counted.
  • A 304 counts. Nothing had changed, but the request still used your allowance.
  • Nothing about the caller is stored with the count.

For the allowance and what to do about a 429, see rate limits in the API documentation (opens in a new tab).

What is not measured

No cookie
Nothing on this page sets or reads a cookie. The cookies Stylehub sets keep you signed in, remember which brand you are in, and record that a reader passed a password gate. None of them counts anything. The privacy policy (opens in a new tab) lists all four.
No visitor identifier
No id, no fingerprint, nothing that survives from one visit to the next. This is why there is no unique visitors number on the page.
No IP address
A visitor's address is not stored with any of these counters.
No cross site tracking
There is no third party script on a published brand hub.
No private manual
A private manual is not counted at all, in any of these numbers.
No team member
A signed in team member opening the private version of a page is not a view, a device or a referrer, and sends no section or download counts.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

A browser that sends DNT: 1 or Sec-GPC: 1 is honored: no section or download counts are recorded for that reader. Views, devices, referrers and the per manual count still are, and none of them holds anything about the reader.

Which plan this needs

Views, the four tiles, the daily chart, the manual breakdown, devices and where readers come from are on every plan, Free included. Sections, downloads and API calls need a paid plan.

PlanSection, download and API analytics
FreeNot included
ProIncluded
BusinessIncluded

On Free those three panels are replaced by one line and a See plans button that opens Billing (opens in a new tab). What counts is the plan of the account that owns the brand, not the plan of whoever is looking. See What each plan includes.

The counting never stops

Sections, downloads and API calls are recorded on every plan from the first day. Free hides the panels but does not switch off the counters. Upgrade three weeks in and you get those three weeks back.

How long the numbers are kept

The daily counters are kept for as long as the brand exists. Delete the brand and they are deleted with it, along with its manuals, its files and its memberships. You cannot clear the counters on their own, and they cannot be filled in for the past: a manual published today starts at zero today.

The charts look back at most twelve months. Anything older is in the All time total only.

When a number looks wrong

Views but no sections
Expected on Free, where that panel is not shown. On a paid plan it usually means readers who left quickly, browsers asking not to be tracked, or sections the reader scrolled past in under a second.
Sections add up to more than views
One visit reads several sections. The share beside a section is its share of all section reads, not of your visitors.
Nothing at all
Check that the manual is published and not private. A private manual is never counted, and a manual behind a password is counted only after a reader passes the gate. See Who may see a manual.
Views stopped on a date
A manual whose end date has passed still serves a page, but that page is a closing sentence and is not counted as a view.
A file with no downloads
A click counts only when the link points at the brand's own files. A file you linked by hand to somewhere else is not counted.
Your own testing
Opening your own public page while signed in is an ordinary view and is counted. Only the private version of a manual is exempt.
Days end at midnight UTC
Every counter uses UTC days. A team far from UTC will see traffic on what is locally the day before or after.
