Uploading files
On this page
Drag files onto the page or press Upload. There is no form to fill in first: the file lands in the folder you have open, and its category is read off the file. Both are editable afterwards.
WhereDashboard, Assets
Four ways to start
- The Upload button above the library on Assets (opens in a new tab). It takes as many files at once as you like.
- Drop files anywhere on the page, not just on the dashed rectangle.
- Drop onto a folder in the library, and the file lands there instead. While you drag, the bar along the bottom says Drop to upload into and the name of the place it will go.
- The Upload folder button, which rebuilds a folder and its structure in the library. Shown only to members who may make folders.
Where the file lands
Files go into the folder you have open. Dropping onto a folder overrides that, and dropping onto All files puts them at the top level. If you are not allowed to upload into the folder you dropped on, the file lands in the folder you were already in. See Folders, categories and tags.
The category it is filed under
One category is guessed from the file, and you can correct it afterwards in the file's own panel. It is always a built in category.
|---|---|
| Fonts | A font: woff, woff2, ttf or otf. |
| Other | Any video or audio file. |
| Logos | The word logo somewhere in the file name. |
| Icons | The word icon somewhere in the file name. |
| Photography | Any other image, including SVG. |
| Documents | A PDF, or a doc, docx, pages or odt file. |
| Presentations | A ppt, pptx, key or odp file. |
| Other | Everything else. |
What may be uploaded
Almost anything: images, SVG, PDFs, video, audio, fonts, office documents, archives. Two things are refused:
Images, PDFs, video, audio and plain text open in the library. Office documents, fonts and archives are stored, but you download them to open them. See Editing a file.
How large a file may be
There is no per file limit. There is a storage quota per brand, counting the files in the library, the versions kept when a file is replaced, and anything in the trash.
| Plan | Storage |
|---|---|
| Free | 512 MB |
| Pro | 25 GB |
| Business | 250 GB |
Over the quota, an upload is refused with Storage limit reached. Upgrade your plan for more space. See The trash, storage and the quota and Plans and limits.
A frozen brand takes no new files
Previews for video and PDF
An image is its own thumbnail. A video gets a frame from near the start, and a PDF gets its first page. A preview can fail without the upload failing. PDFs over 64 MB, office documents, presentations and fonts get no preview.
A file the library already has
A file already in the library is held rather than sent. It is marked Already here in the upload panel, with Same bytes as and the name of the file it matches and the folder it sits in. The top line of the panel reads 1 already in the library, waiting on you. Nothing has been uploaded, and the choice is yours:
The upload panel
The panel in the corner reports the run and keeps going while you move around the dashboard. It opens itself when a run starts and collapses to one line with Hide. The top line reads Uploading 3 of 8, 41%, and when nothing is left it becomes a report: files uploaded, files failed, or both.
A run with no failures closes itself four seconds after it finishes. A run with a failure stays until you dismiss it.
Closing the tab stops the upload
Uploading a whole folder
Press Upload folder and choose the folder, or drag the folder onto the page. Either way the structure is rebuilt in the library, and every file lands in the folder it came from.
.DS_Store, Thumbs.db, desktop.ini, anything beginning ._ and anything under __MACOSX are skipped.A dropped folder in an older browser
What you need to be allowed to do
asset:writeasset:foldersWithout Upload files, and rename, edit, duplicate and refile them the Upload button is not shown. Upload folder needs Make and change folders and categories, upload a whole folder, and set who may use each one as well; without it the button is not shown, and a dropped folder is refused with You cannot make folders in this brand. A single folder can also require a higher role to upload into. See Roles and Custom roles.
Failures and what to do
A failed upload leaves nothing behind
After the upload
- Each file records who uploaded it and when, and the upload appears under Assets in the activity log as Uploaded asset with the file name.
- The name, the categories, the tags and the folder are all editable. See Editing a file.
- Before deleting a file, check Where a file is used.
