What Stylehub is, and the words it uses

On this page

Stylehub is a brand manual that lives at a web address instead of in a PDF you have to keep re-sending. You create a brand, build a manual out of blocks, and publish it as a page.

What the product is

A published manual is one link that always shows the current version. Change a color in the editor and everyone who has the link sees the new color. No out of date copy sits in somebody's downloads folder.

The published page gives a reader:

  • Search across every section of that manual.
  • A section list that follows the scroll, and a progress bar.
  • A permanent link to any section or block.
  • A print view, and the same manual as a PDF.
  • Colors with their HEX, RGB, HSL and CMYK values, and typefaces shown as live specimens.

The words this help center uses

Brand
The container. It holds manuals, files, people, roles, an address and the API tokens made on its API (opens in a new tab) page. Two brands share nothing but the account that owns them.
Manual
One document inside a brand, with its own template, design settings, visibility and address.
Subdomain
The first part of a brand's address, made from the company name when the brand is created: the acme in acme.stylehub.cloud. A manual can have one of its own as well.
Slug
The last part of a manual's address under the brand, such as guidelines in acme.stylehub.cloud/guidelines. The API names a manual by the same words.
Brand hub
The public page of a manual, at its address. The dashboard uses the phrase before the manual is published too, for the page it will be. Publishing does not create a second copy.
Section
A part of a manual. It has a title, a position, and blocks inside it.
Block
One piece of content inside a section, of one of 41 kinds. A color palette is a block, so is a logo set, so is a paragraph of text.
Design token
A named design decision in a form code can read: a color, a spacing step, a breakpoint, a duration.
Member
A person with access to a brand, holding one role in it.
Plan
Free, Pro or Business. It belongs to an account and sets the limits of every brand that account owns.

Two words for one thing

Brand and workspace are the same thing. The settings page, the account menu and the Terms say workspace, as in Workspace settings and Workspace address. In the export of your account data it appears as organization. In the same way, a manual is called a brand hub once it is published, and the nav calls the page Brand manual.

What a manual carries

A brand may hold several manuals, so you can keep a full manual, a one page partner summary and a campaign guide apart. One manual in each brand is the primary one: the brand address serves it at the root, and the others sit under it at their own slug.

VisibilityWhat it means
PublicAnyone can find and view it.
UnlistedOnly people with the link. Hidden from search.
PrivateNot shown publicly. Team views it in the app.
Password protectedPublic link, but a password is required.

Which one to choose is in Who may see a manual, and publishing itself is Publishing. Turn on review before publishing and the public page keeps showing the approved version while you keep editing, until somebody publishes again. See Reviewing changes before they go live.

How many brands you may own is a plan limit: 1 on Free, 5 on Pro, 25 on Business. See Brands, manuals and how they fit together.

Blocks

A block's kind decides which fields it offers and how it is drawn. A color block asks for swatches and shows contrast ratings, a typography block asks for typefaces and renders specimens, a rich text block asks for text. There are 41 kinds in the picker, in 7 groups:

Identity
What the brand looks like. 7 kinds.
Layout and surfaces
The system underneath the design. 9 kinds.
Story
What the brand says and stands for. 7 kinds.
Images and media
Photography, video and sound. 7 kinds.
In use
How the brand is applied day to day. 1 kinds.
Guidance and files
Rules, notes and things to download. 8 kinds.
Reach the brand
Where to go and who to ask. 2 kinds.
  • A block can be kept off the public page. Under Who can see it a block is either Everyone or Only the team.
  • Sections and blocks keep a permanent anchor. A link into the middle of a manual still lands after a rename or a move. See Text, headings, anchors and links.

The full catalog is Every block, and what it holds, and the editor is The editor: sections, blocks and saving.

Design tokens

You never enter tokens anywhere. They are collected from the blocks that already hold those decisions, so filling in the color block is what fills the color tokens. Export tokens (opens in a new tab) offers 13 formats, each copyable or downloadable as a file: CSS, SCSS, Less, JS and TS, Tailwind, JSON, W3C Tokens, Style Dictionary, SwiftUI, Compose, Flutter, Android XML, CSV. The same tokens are readable over the API at {slug}/tokens.json. See Design tokens and the API examples (opens in a new tab).

Members and roles

Membership is per brand. The same person can be an admin of one brand and a viewer of another, and the two do not affect each other.

RoleWhat it is
OwnerFull control, including billing and deleting the workspace. There is one owner.
AdminRuns the workspace day to day: edits and publishes the manual, manages assets, the team and settings.
EditorBuilds the brand manual and manages assets, but does not manage the team or settings.
ViewerRead only access to the manual and assets.

These 4 roles are on every plan. Business adds roles you build yourself from the 13 permissions, two of which only an owner may hold: billing and deleting the brand. People join by invitation, and you hand a brand to somebody else by transferring ownership. How many members a brand may have is a plan limit: 3 on Free, 15 on Pro, 100 on Business, the owner counted. See Roles, Custom roles, Invitations and Handing a brand over.

A limit never removes somebody

When a members limit is passed, a seat is set to read only and the role it held is remembered. Nobody is taken out of a brand, and an upgrade gives the role back.

Plans

The plan sits on the account, not on the brand. One Pro subscription covers every brand that account owns. A brand is on the plan of the account that owns it, whoever is looking at it.

PlanA monthWho it is for
FreeFreeOne brand, published properly, at no cost.
Pro29 USDYour own domain, your own fonts, several brands.
Business99 USDAgencies and larger teams, with roles that fit.

Every plan includes the whole editor, every block, the asset library, the token export and the read only API. See What each plan includes and What a downgrade freezes.

What it is not

Not a digital asset manager

The asset library serves the manuals of one brand. Files belong to a brand, count against that brand's storage, and are not shared across brands. See Uploading files, Folders and categories and Where a file is used.

Not a website builder

A brand hub is one shape of page, not a blank canvas. You choose a template, an accent color, a header image and a few controls. You cannot lay out arbitrary pages, and there is no place to write HTML, CSS or a script. A custom domain points at a brand hub, not at a site you can add pages to. See Color and Your own domain.

The shortest way in

  1. Create a brand. Give it a company name and it gets a subdomain.
  2. Fill the sections it came with: colors, typography, the logo, tone of voice.
  3. Choose a template and an accent color.
  4. Publish, and send the link.

Step by step, that is From nothing to a published manual.
